Hi there from Cake!

Life here at Cake is not only about project related work but also doing outside of those projects more of what we love - TO CODE
So if you are interested in reading a mildly philosophical and technical blog about our experience with Hackathons and some related tips then please read on. We hope you enjoy reading.

As you can imagine most of the people here at Cake are very passionate about programming and so if we can try something new, have fun and maybe even win something that's definitely time well spent. We have participated in both local public and private company Hackathons, and have been regular participants of Hack Manchester for the past 3 years.

Not so long ago, I was one of those people that considered testing as an important step, but certainly not as something worthy of spending as much time and effort on as the code it covers. The quality and reliability of it was certainly not the highest priority, especially in a feature driven world. But all that changed when I came to work here, where I had the chance to work on some serious testing with people really interested in producing good quality code.

Here at Cake we are passionate about software and application development, but not just from technology and innovation viewpoints. We are curious about the impact upon business, society and the individual, and within this, both work and personal perspectives, of what we and our industry does. Original technical thinking, providing solutions to business challenges – enabling software innovation - is what gets us out of bed. But more than that, we’re captivated about the potential and impact of technology, and advocates of technology being a force for good.

At Cake Solutions, we do a lot of open source work; we give talks at user groups and conferences; we go to mostly the UK conferences and sometimes venture out on the continental Europe and even further afield.

If you're up for it, the we will present a collection of experiments and pet projects to try in your free time as part of the Practical Spring course.
The projects usually combine Spring Framework on the server side with some existing [social] services and possibly some microcontroller-based hardware.
One of the most complex pet projects is the advanced alarm clock; if you want to get started yourself, download the slides here and book the Practical Spring course for detailed discussion and implementation tips.
